Preparation instructions

Some products require some preparation by the customer before they are consumed. For example, cereal products may require the addition of milk or water.

Where a product requires preparation, any added ingredient should not contain any added sodium or free sugars (including fruit juice). This advice should be stated clearly on pack. If it is not, the product will fail on this component of the NPPM.

Tip: preparation instructions are most likely to be found on products in categories 1. (Cereals), 4. (Meals/meal components) and 6. (Ingredients). Check these products extra carefully for their preparation instructions.

The NPPM is a Nutrient and Promotion Profile Model by WHO and University of Leeds, designed to assess the appropriateness of commercial baby foods.
